Perfect Balance Marketing
Attending an Outset Cornwall event in March 2011 inspired Lucy Thornton to take the plunge and enrol on the Outset programme, working on her idea to help small enterprises develop their marketing and social media strategies.
After completing the programme, Lucy launched Perfect Balance Marketing later that year, winning some major contracts with local businesses and organisations, as well as the Cornwall and Devon Media Business Accelerator competition in early 2012, where first prize was £10,000 worth of advertising.
“Winning the competition was a major milestone for me, as suddenly I was highly visible, meaning more calls, emails and clients sooner than I expected,” says Lucy. “It was just fantastic to have that boost and opportunity so early on though.”
Since launching her business, Lucy has experienced many proud moments, from seeing articles she’s written in print or on a website to being invited to lecture students at local colleges as part of their degree courses.
Lucy says: “Every day is different and never feels like work, even the late nights writing proposals, fixing a Facebook problem or optimizing a web page.”
“I’m always learning new things about marketing, especially digital marketing, and I’m forever inspired by Mari Smith, who’s a big deal in the social media marketing world, consistently delivering excellent content, news and tips and totally living her personal brand. She’s brightened my day many times with motivational and helpful posts!”
Having grown a successful business that continues to go from strength to strength, Lucy makes an ideal role model for the Outset Ambassador programme, allowing her the opportunity to share her wisdom and experience with future business owners and give something back to the service that supported her initially.
“If it hadn’t been for Outset Cornwall, I would still be working for someone else now,” says Lucy. “Outset gave me the confidence to take my business idea seriously and the skills to implement it, so becoming an ambassador gives me the opportunity to support Outset by working with other start-ups and hopefully helping them become a success.”
Lucy’s top tip for aspiring entrepreneurs is to communicate and network with other people in the same situation.
“Talk to people, attend networking events, join start-up groups on Facebook and listen to relevant podcasts. There are millions of people going through the same things you are and they are an amazing source of inspiration,” states Lucy. “Whether you’re struggling with your tax return, juggling a ten page to-do list or ready to throw in the towel after a bad experience, your network will be there to pick you up, put you back on the right track and also share your successes.”
