I’ve found the Outset programme extremely supportive and motivating, and the regular meetings with my advisor and fellow start-up colleagues have kept me inspired and focused.

Monique’s story

My ambition was always to start my own business. I have an art and design background, so with my creative career pre-children and personal interest, it felt natural to develop my skill base into jewellery making.”

After studying theatre design at art school, Monique worked in a variety of theatres nationally, culminating at the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh, where she became Head Scenic Artist before putting her career on hold to raise a family.

Once her children had started school full-time, Monique seized the opportunity to return to college to learn the skills and techniques she needed to become a jewellery designer and maker.

“I’ve always loved making and creating objects and curiosities; in fact I still have a box in the spare room full of all my sketchbooks, ideas and paintings that I made as a child through to my student years!”

Taking inspiration from Cornwall’s stunning coastline and wildlife, Monique hand-makes sterling silver jewellery in her home workshop, often incorporating brass, copper and semi-precious stones in her designs to add contrast and colour.

In April 2012, Monique attended her first ever craft fair, where a fellow stallholder told her about Outset Cornwall.

“At the time I wrote down the name but didn’t do anything about it. Then my husband, who got so fed up with me going on about starting a jewellery business, brought a leaflet home about a local business start-up course, which happened to be run by Outset Cornwall. I made a phone call that afternoon and booked a place on the next available course!”

Since starting the course, Monique has gained a better understanding of business including the importance of writing a business plan and mission statement, and setting realistic goals for her business.

“I’ve found the Outset programme extremely supportive and motivating, and the regular meetings with my advisor and fellow start-up colleagues have kept me inspired and focused.”

Monique plans to continue making jewellery and building her business, developing a strong brand identity and loyal customer base, and potentially increasing her retail outlets to become a recognised silver jewellery maker in Cornwall.

“Before I started the course, all I knew was that I wanted to start a business, but I felt overwhelmed by the prospect. Outset Cornwall has given me the confidence to go for it, and now I feel empowered to take on the challenge of running and developing my own business.”
