“I wanted a change from a stressful career that I no longer enjoyed. Stress was affecting my health and I had the desire to go off and do something else. I wanted to put myself in a position where I would be open to new opportunities and ideas.”
After a period away in South America, Mike started to re-assess his options by discovering what opportunities were available in the Cornish business community. His existing connections and his extensive knowledge base helped him to find some freelance work.
“I was asked to do some coding on a freelance basis for a small graphic design agency in Truro that were expanding into the web design market. Through doing that I started meet a number of other clients that were feeling disillusioned and unhappy regarding their experiences with existing design agencies.”
Together with his expertise in coding and design, Mike was able to offer a package to these businesses. He started to realise that he could meet the needs of these businesses while offering a personable, tailored approach that so many big agencies lacked.
“Coming from a very customer-oriented engineering background I felt very strongly about service and a personal approach. I knew that I could provide a high value, high quality, professional and approachable service based entirely around the needs of a client without the need to hide behind ‘buzz words’ or perpetuating the idea of the web as something of a ‘black art’.”
With a great idea for a new business in place, Mike knew that his dream job was working for himself! Now all Mike needed was to get his business up and running. Mike came to Outset to get his idea on track.
“Having been employed throughout my career to date I wanted an insight into the things I need to think about when running a business, and Outset were able to help me with this. They also helped me to meet people in a similar situation to me. It has been something of an emotional roller-coaster for me and without Outset I think I would have really struggled to maintain the motivation to keep going.”
“It has given me the motivation to continue with what I think is a difficult path. That has been achieved through excellent course delivery, content and informal discussion and support.”
Mike’s new business, Mikesimagination, is associated with web development specialising in more complex applications than normal static sites, although he happily applies the same principles of high quality design and attention to detail to those also. Mike enjoys translating ideas into reality and using his technical ability to design applications that are interactive.
Mike came to Outset to make his an idea a reality and now has successfully launched his enterprise. He continues to engage with the programme at regular networking events, passing on his expertise to other Outset entrepreneurs.
“The additional workshops and seminars on offer have also been invaluable in providing essential knowledge as well as the opportunity to meet a variety of people.”
So, what does the future hold for Mike? He is already forward planning and starting to form connections in hope to collaborate with other likeminded Cornish businesses as well as other forms of partnership working.
“There are other possible collaborative projects on the cards also. I think working with people in teams with complementary skills is the most exciting prospect for the future and will in itself bring further opportunities as well as expand my skills and experience base in ways that can only be positive.”
