Applying for the Crafts Council programme is something I never would have done before Outset. I’m so pleased I took that first step and contacted Outset Cornwall, or I wouldn’t be where I am now.

Katy’s story

Since completing her training as a jeweller over 10 years ago, Katy Luxton found she lacked the confidence and support she needed to realise her dream of running her own jewellery company.

Finally, faced with redundancy in her role as a project support worker, Katy decided to take the first step and approached Outset Cornwall for support in turning her dream into a reality.

“I had wanted to set up my own business for a long time but didn’t really know where to begin and certainly didn’t have the confidence. I’d been designing pieces and had some great new ideas, but chatting with my colleagues made me see I would never sell my jewellery if I didn’t show it to people. Being made redundant gave me the jolt I needed to realise I just had to try this.

“I came to Outset Cornwall because I needed to prove to myself and others that it was a good idea to start a business, and I wanted to find out what I didn’t know, which turned out to be quite a lot!

“The Outset programme was challenging but useful because now I was working through issues that had been mentioned when my business was just a distant dream, so to actually be doing it when I really was trying to sell my jewellery made much more sense.”

Katy’s new business, Katy Luxton Jewellery, features stylish, unique and sculptural jewellery, inspired by circles, repetition and geometric shapes, and made from recycled gold and silver, which she sells through her website and at various craft fairs and exhibitions up and down the country.

“When I finished the Outset programme and presented my jewellery to the group, the positive feedback I received was amazing, and I felt overwhelmed by all the suggestions I got on where to go next, because I didn’t know how I would get there.

“Thanks to the support and help I’ve received from Outset Cornwall, I can look back now and see how far I’ve come both with my business and as a person. My confidence has improved immensely.

Having been accepted on to the Crafts Council Hothouse programme, where she will receive tailor-made business and creative support for six months, Katy plans to complete the programme whilst continuing to grow her business.

“Applying for the Crafts Council programme is something I never would have done before Outset. I’m so pleased I took that first step and contacted Outset Cornwall, or I wouldn’t be where I am now.”
