Starting the business has been an exciting and exhilarating journey. I take comfort in feeling that I’m not alone in my anxieties and fears surrounding staring up a new business. Thank you Outset

Elizabeth’s story

After leaving her profession as a paediatric nurse, Liz took a side step from her busy job to care and raise her family. Like so many mothers, Liz was actively involved with her children’s school lives, joining various committees and becoming a school governor, allowing her to build connections and meet new people.

With a thirst for creativity, Liz decided these commitments weren’t enough. She started indulged hobbies such as playing the violin and the viola. A dab hand with a needle and thread, Liz also started to make curtains in her spare time. She soon realised her passion for sewing and making things, and started to take on more and more small projects for friends and family.

“Other things have always taken over my working life and I did not have the time or facilities to continue sewing for several years. Now that the pattern of family life has changed again with my children growing up and leaving home, I am in a position to take up my needle again.”

Her expert skills and her passion for sewing stemmed Liz’s idea for her great new business, Transformations Cornwall. With her new venture, Liz makes high quality bespoke curtains, blinds and soft furnishings by hand to customers’ individual requirements.

“ I have always enjoyed sewing and fabrics and I also have a long-standing interest in Interior Design. I did quite a lot of curtain making for private clients and a local shop while my children were young and learned the skills required for making various styles of window dressing. Launching the business was the next step to turning my hobby into a dream business.”

Liz came to Outset Cornwall for support in turning that idea into a reality. By attending the Introduction to Enterprise and business start-up sessions, Liz started to build the foundations for her business plan.

“I knew nothing about running a business and Outset offered the kind of straightforward information I needed within a supportive environment. The programme has been very helpful in introducing business concepts such as marketing and finances in a supportive, non-threatening way.

Liz continues to network and build connections with the support from fellow group members. Spreading the word about Transformations Cornwall, Liz is taking on new clients and working on exciting new projects. She is concentrating on building a regular client base by offering an individual service to her customers by producing furnishings of high quality and unique design.

In the future Liz hopes to take on premises away from her current home workshop, where she can have space to take on larger projects and have showroom facilities.

“Starting the business has been an exciting and exhilarating journey. I take comfort in feeling that I’m not alone in my anxieties and fears surrounding staring up a new business. Thank you Outset”
