We found the sessions very useful. Meeting other people in a similar position to us, in relation to starting out in business, enabled us to build a great support network.

Amy’s story

Amy Lovegrove sadly lost her own mum to cancer when her baby was only 12 months old and learnt all to quickly the importance of having that external support. “I suddenly lost the person who I relied on to support me in my new role of being a mother, answering general questions about my baby, such as why she was feeding so frequently, how do I get her sleeping through the night and also to make me the cup of tea I so desperately wanted whilst I was feeding my baby! Overnight I had no-one I could turn to for advice and guidance about parenting issues, which I remember was a very lonely and scary time in my life.”

With an impressive list of qualifications and high level experience in psychology and child and family support, it was the loss of her mother and her job at CAFFCASS (Child and Family Court Advisory Support Service) where she worked closely with children involved in custody battles, that Amy realised that the biggest lack in provision was low level support for parents, so set about launching a very special new service.

After developing the idea of Nurturing Hands, Amy and her business partner recognised that they needed additional support with planning finances, profit and loss, and sales and marketing techniques. “I read about Outset Cornwall in the local paper offering free business start up sessions…and that’s where it all started.”

“We found the sessions very useful. Meeting other people in a similar position to us, in relation to starting out in business, enabled us to build a great support network. The start-up sessions gave us the initial boost we needed to have the confidence to go out there, into the daunting world of business and give it a big fat go! And we did, with absolutely no regrets…so thank you Outset Cornwall!”

“Nurturing Hands is a charity that provides support to families across Cornwall, through our Baby Massage, Baby Academy, Toddler Academy and other educational services and workshops. Parents can meet on a regular basis to reduce isolation, depression and ultimately meet other people going through similar situations. We provide parents with the information, advice and guidance they need to enhance their skills and confidence as a parent, which in turn will improve positive outcomes for themselves and their future generations.”

Amy has exciting plans for Nurturing Hands, and is working with ERDF Convergence funded Grow Cornwall to develop a range of commercial products, as well as working with a PR company to raise their profile nationally and internationally. The company has recently recruited a funding advisor and have plans to expand the team further in the future.
