As one of Outset's more experienced clients, Russ joined the programme with over 21 years' experience of running his own business and being self-employed. Following the start of the recession, however, issues with staff and then a major theft took their toll, and his business was forced to close down. This very nearly took away all of Russ' confidence in running his own enterprise.

A self-confessed ‘hands-on doer’, Russ was unemployed for 6 months but soon felt that this wasn’t enough and wanted some practical support to get back in the saddle again.

“Although I had run my own businesses before, I am a firm subscriber to the saying ‘never believe that you know it all’! There is always something new to learn,” says Russ. “If nothing else, I needed support to get more confidence in myself and Outset offered just what I needed.”

RussTrading is a brand new business specialising in the sale, repair and installation of audio, visual and lighting equipment for domestic and commercial clients. In addition, Russ Trading now offers a comprehensive systems design and audio consultancy service to compliment his core services.

“The programme was a great confidence building experience where I got to develop some strong relationships within the group. The opportunity to work as part of a team was certainly one of my favourite bits!”

The business seems to be working well, with Russ’ biggest source of clients coming from either word of mouth or repeat business. With confidence levels back up and a new business to focus on, Russ is now going from strength to strength.
