Having spent 20 years in post 16 education, maintaining responsibility for the design and implementation of various courses in both formal and informal teaching and training, unemployment was not something that John was used to or comfortable with when it struck. With a real lack of suitable jobs available in the county, but a passion to stay living in South East Cornwall, John started seeking advice on what to do next.

After enrolling with local employment support specialists, Working Links, John was signposted to Outset Cornwall to explore the idea of starting a new training organization; something suggested by Working Links after considering John’s extensive qualifications and experience.

“The sessions with Outset were of first class quality.” Says John. “My most memorable bits were being able to openly discuss my barriers to self-employment with other people in the same position as myself.”

“I am an out going person, very approachable and willing to learn. Once I grasp an idea I can become very focused.” And this certainly showed, as John quickly progressed through the programme, remaining focused on creating a fantastic new business, delivering professional training across the region.

Having attended the range of workshops and one-to-one support available through the programme, John was proud to launch ‘Evolution Training South West Ltd’ in mid-2011, “a forward thinking training agency with the experience and skills to help clients evolve in an ever changing work environment.”.

“Outset Cornwall helped me focus my ideas and define the direction of my business. They also gave me the confidence to take the huge first step and to sign off unemployment and go for my dreams.”

“Outset taught me to keep focused on my core business and not expand to quickly, which was a very useful piece of advice for someone very ambitious. That said, some growth is good and so over the next 12 months I certainly plan to take on staff and move into an office, so watch this space!”

With John’s business launched and an exciting year ahead planned, John is looking forward to taking back control of his life and leaving unemployment benefits behind him.
